Call for Abstracts

2022 Taipei International Conference on Arbitration and Mediation                                                            

The Chinese Arbitration Association, Taipei (CAA) and the Asian Center for WTO & International Health Law and Policy (ACWH), National Taiwan University College of Law, will jointly host the “2022 Taipei International Conference on Arbitration and Mediation” on 5 October 2022 in Taipei, Taiwan.
 

The theme of the conference is “Past, Present and Future of International Dispute Resolution: Pandemic, Digital Economy and Environment, Society, and Governance (ESG) as Examples”. Considering border restrictions and quarantine measures are still in place for the COVID pandemic, this year, we are planning a hybrid conference. To ensure effective interaction between onsite and online participants, there will be 3 sessions to be held on 5 October 2022 and each session will last for 2 hours.
 

Arbitration experts and scholars are welcome to submit abstracts (500 to 1000 words) on the following topics. The organizing committee will select the abstracts and announce the results by July 10, 2022. Prospective authors are required to submit their draft papers by the end of August. Submitted draft papers shall be unpublished and are strongly encouraged to use the US Bluebook format. Please note that only after the draft papers have been submitted, the prospective authors will be invited to present the papers at the conference. In the case that a draft paper has multi-authors, only one author can be arranged as a presenter in a session. An author is not allowed to present more than one paper at the conference.
 

The pandemic has had enormous impacts on international economic activities and relations. As the pandemic has gradually faded away, it is crucial to reflect on its impact on the law and practice of international dispute resolution, including commercial arbitration, investment arbitration, mediation, and other forms of alternative dispute resolution.

The discussions are not limited to looking at the past experiences from the perspective of dispute resolution. They can also include whether the lesson from the pandemic can help us respond to a future disastrous event of similar scale with respect to dispute resolution. Followings are the points for consideration:

• • The challenge posed by the pandemic to international dispute resolution laws;
  • The evolution of international dispute resolution practices in response to the pandemic;
  • The lessons learned by the international dispute resolution community during the pandemic;
  • The potential international dispute resolution reforms in the post-pandemic era;
  • The functions of international dispute resolution in rebuilding or facilitating the post-pandemic commerce and investment;

New digital products and applications, such as metaverse, continue emerging. As the digital economy has become the reality of the world economy, it is crucial to reflect on how it challenges international dispute resolution and how the existing or new modes of dispute resolution may address these challenges.

The digital economy is an ongoing and ever-growing trend. In addition to addressing the current situations, discussions can also be made from the perspective of future development in relation to dispute settlement. Followings are points for consideration:

• • International dispute resolution law and practice in the digital economy;
  • Online platforms and international dispute resolution;
  • Financial technology and international dispute resolution;
  • Technological applications that may enhance the efficiency of international dispute resolution;
  • International dispute resolution in the metaverse world;

3. Environment, Society, and Governance (ESG) & International Dispute Resolution (Session III at 15:30-17:30 GMT+8)

The world has started to pay heightened attention to the ESG issues related to future generations, e.g., climate change, human rights, diversity, conflict, etc. These issues apply to various industrial sectors, including energy, construction, high-tech, or finance, and they involve various economic aspects, including trade, investment, supply chain, financial market, etc. To pursue these ESG goals, international dispute resolution may have a role. Topics may include:

• • How international dispute resolution may contribute to the pursuit of ESG goals;
  • International dispute resolution and climate change;
  • International dispute resolution and conflict prevention;
  • International dispute resolution and human right or diversity;
  • International dispute resolution and supply chain management;

In addition to the above three events or developments, any topics relating to past and present event, or any possible future development worthy of discussions are welcome.
 

IV. Important Information

• • Abstracts submission deadline: June 20, 2022
  • Abstracts acceptance notification: July 10, 2022
  • Draft paper submission deadline: August 31, 2022
  • Conference dates: 5 October, 2022

All abstracts and draft papers are required to be written and presented in English.

Authors are welcome to submit abstracts and provide a short biography (including recent publications in English) in the format of a Word file or PDF file to wtocenter@ntu.edu.tw.

The abstract submission must include the following information:

• • Proposed paper title;
  • Name, middle name and surname of the author;
  • Email address;
  • Abstract (500 to 1000 words);
  • Up to 10 keywords.
