Call for Papers
2021 Taipei International Conference on Arbitration and Mediation 

The Chinese Arbitration Association, Taipei (CAA) and the Asian Center for WTO & International Health Law and Policy, College of Law, National Taiwan University (ACWH) are to jointly host the “2021 Taipei International Conference on Arbitration and Mediation” in October 21, 27 and 28, 2021 in Taipei, Taiwan. Considering the various travel restrictions due to the pandemic, this year we are planning a hybrid conference. To ensure effective interaction between onsite and online participants, there will be 3 sessions to be held on 3 designated dates in October and each session for 2 hours. Arbitration experts and scholars are welcome to provide unpublished academic papers and case studies on any one of the following topics:

Topic 1: Due process as a ground for annulment or non-enforcement of arbitral awards
- What is the extent of judicial deference to arbitral discretion? Do courts adopt different tests or standards for due process?
- What is the minimum standard of due process in light of recent cases of serious violation resulting in annulment or non-enforcement?
- Whether and how arbitral institutions can assist with managing due process paranoia?
- How has COVID-19 affected due process (e.g. remote hearings and e-arbitration)?

Topic 2: Ethics in international arbitration
- Whose and what conduct should be regulated? By whom and how?
- Current and controversial ethical issues (e.g. arbitrator disclosure and withdrawal; party confidentiality; hot-tubbing and witness conferencing)

Topic 3: Arbitrating in Taiwan
- Why and how to arbitrate in Taiwan?
- Recent legislative, judicial and/or institutional developments in Taiwan

Abstract acceptance notification: June 30, 2021
Full paper submission deadline: July 30, 2021
Full paper acceptance notification: August 20, 2021

      Session 2: 14:00-16:00, Oct. 27, 2021 
      Session 3: 15:30-17:30, Oct. 28, 2021

Review process

The review process will be divided into two stages: the initial stage of review and the final stage of review. “Articles passing the review process” refer to the submitted abstracts/articles that have passed both the initial and final stage of review.
The initial stage of review: Applicants will need to submit their abstracts of the papers before the abstract submission deadline. He/she will be informed of the result of initial review on June 30, 2021. The applicants whose abstracts pass the initial stage of review will need to submit their full papers before the full paper submission deadline.
The final stage of review: Applicants whose full papers pass the final review process will be invited to present at the conference. They will also be encouraged to submit their papers to the Contemporary Asia Arbitration Journal (CAAJ) for a peer-review process seeking possible publication.

The best paper selected by the Review Committee will be granted an award of USD 500. The author has to present his/her paper at the Conference so as to be qualified for this USD 500 award. In the case of co-authors, please note that they will share the USD 500 award.

Conference/Paper Language

All the papers need to be written and presented in English.

Guidelines for Abstract / Paper Submission

Abstract: The submitted abstract of the article should be within 500 words.
Full paper: The total number of words in the content of an article for submission should be between 5,000 to 10,000 words. Authors are strongly encouraged to use blue book citation for their submissions.
