2024 Taipei International Conference on Arbitration and Mediation

The Chinese Arbitration Association, Taipei (“CAA”), and the Asian Center for WTO & International Health Law and Policy, College of Law, National Taiwan University (“ACWH”) will jointly host the 2024 Taipei International Conference on Arbitration and Mediation on 29-30 October 2024 in Taipei, Taiwan.

Theme
 

The conference theme is “International Dispute Resolution in Evolution: The Technological and Legal Perspectives.” The UNCITRAL Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration, adopted in 1985, represents a significant milestone in international dispute resolution law. As its 40th anniversary approaches, it is time to reflect on its achievements and resilience. We will explore how different legal systems incorporate the UNCITRAL Model Law, its role in harmonizing legal disparities, its extension to other types of disputes like investment and world trade, and the challenges posed by emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and blockchain.
 

Submission
 

Submissions of abstracts (500 to 1000 words) on any of the following topics are welcome:

1. Technological Evolution and International Dispute Resolution Laws:

• Challenges posed by emerging technologies to international dispute resolution.
• The impact of technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, smart contracts, video meetings, electronic signatures, biometrics, cloud storage, and data analytics on arbitration processes.
• Opportunities and risks introduced by these technologies.
• Adaptations required in international dispute resolution laws to accommodate technological advances.
• Suggested topics include:
  • Other topics related to technological evolution and international  dispute resolution laws.
  • Application of advanced technology in dispute resolution.
  • Blockchain/Smart contracts and international dispute resolution laws.
  • Artificial intelligence and international dispute resolution laws.

2. Legal Systems and UNCITRAL Model Law:

• How different legal systems have adopted international dispute resolution laws.
• The enactment and practice of the UNCITRAL Model Law across different legal frameworks.
• The capacity of the UNCITRAL Model Law to harmonize divergent legal systems.
• Potential redesigns of the UNCITRAL Model Law to better accommodate various legal systems.
• Suggested topics include:
  • Comparative dispute resolution laws.
  • Other topics related to legal systems and UNCITRAL Model Law.
  • Civil law systems and UNCITRAL Model Law.
  • Domestic implementation of UNCITRAL Model Law.

3. Redesigning or Refining the Laws and Mechanisms for Resolving International Public Disputes:

• Development and redesign of dispute resolution mechanisms for international public disputes like ISDS and WTO disputes.
• The relevance of existing international dispute resolution laws to new forms of disputes.
• Concerns and initiatives regarding the reform of dispute resolution mechanisms.
• Suggested topics include:
  • Recent developments in dispute resolution mechanisms for international public disputes.
  • WTO’s dispute settlement reform.
  • Application of international dispute resolution laws to WTO and ISDS disputes.
  • Other topics related to international public disputes and international dispute resolution laws.

Review Process

The organizing committee will select abstracts and announce the results on July 31, 2024. Applicants whose abstracts pass the review process will be invited to present at the conference. Paper presenters shall submit the complete and unpublished papers by September 30, 2024. Additionally, paper presenters and submitters are encouraged to submit their papers to the Contemporary Asia Arbitration Journal (CAAJ), an ESCI-indexed journal published by ACWH on a semiannual basis, for a peer-review process seeking possible publication.

• Abstracts submission deadline: July 10, 2024
• Abstracts acceptance notification: July 31, 2024
• Full paper submission deadline: September 30, 2024
• Conference dates: October 29-30, 2024

Conference/Paper Language

All papers need to be written and presented in English.

The prospective author is invited to submit your abstract and curriculum vitae in a Word or PDF file to wtocenter@ntu.edu.tw. The abstract submission must include the following information:

• Paper Title
• Name, middle name, and surname of the author
• Affiliate institution and title
• Email address
• Abstract (500 to 1000 words)
• Up to 10 keywords

Authors are strongly encouraged to use Bluebook citations for their abstract and full paper submissions.
